ARKEAN is an innovative start-up born from the desire to bring to the market a new patented process dedicated to the soils consolidation through cyclic injections of expanding polyurethane resins.
Compared to existing monitoring technologies, the ARKEAN procedure provides for a double monitoring – SOIL + STRUCTURE – allowing an increase of level mastery during site operations, with a corresponding
Although this is a specific and niche application, the construction site procedures require several skills : from geotechnic to structure , from acoustics to polyurethane chemistry. Therefore, within the company ARKEANLab is established: a grouping of professionals specialized in the various sectors of interest.
The technical activities are coordinated by Paolo Siano, civil and environmental engineer, founder and sole director with ten-year experience in the soil consolidation field (Certification of competence : Cert’Ing Advanced Certification n. SAB-5015-IT21).
The need to safeguard the existing real estate assets, together with the need to impact as little as possible on the structures and related activities (residential, industrial, commercial contexts as well as those of a historical nature), means that the market requires fast and minimally invasive interventions with sustainable costs. dB-Consolidation – the commercial name of the innovative construction site procedure conceived by ARKEAN – guarantees all of this.
The procedure is protected by:
After making small diameter holes and inserting the injection tubes on one or more deep along the same vertical, the construction procedure involves the injection of special expanding polyurethane resins into the volumes of soft ground: the resin, injected in the liquid phase, permeates the soil when it comes out of the injection tube and in less than a minute it begins to expand in a confined environment, compacting the grains of soil, filling the voids and absorbing/displacing the interstitial water (if present), until polymerization.
The innovation and exclusivity brought by ARKEAN to the market resides in a double monitoring carried out continuously and in real time during the treatment. Latest generation acoustic instruments allow a real time monitoring both consolidating effects on the ground and on the structure during injection stage.
The friction of resin expansion generates noises that are detected and amplified at the surface by one or more high sensitivity geophones arranged suitably on countryside level close to the injection vertical.
The acoustic measurements allow to locate the consolidation path of each injection cycle in real time, to guarantee that the volume of injected resin expans insiede the desired volumes of soil interrupting the cycle in progress in case of leakage from the perimeter of interest. The analysis and the trend of the acoustic parameters detected allow to monitor the treatment of each single injection point, validating it and moving on to the next once a stabilization of the measurements has been achieved.

Patent n. EP4048841B1
During the treatment of a generic injection point, once the resin expansion has exhausted the consolidating actions in the soil (void filling, interstitial water displacement, grain thickening, actions monitored with high sensitivity geophones), the increased confinement conditions around the injection point are likely to exert thrusts which, if prolonged over time, can induce movements/lifting of the ground and / or the overlying structure. Before that a real lifting occurs, the structure goes through a phase of “stress” induced on the structure by the thrust of the resin, during which Acoustic Emissions (AE) are generated in the matter of the structure and which are detectable by special transducers applied to the structure itself.
Knowing sound impulses are propagating in the structure during the treatment means that the injection cycle in progress has exhausted (or is close to exhausting) the consolidating actions on the ground and is starting to produce the first effects of thrust on the overlying structure. This information allows site operators to dose injection cycles with increased attention, temporarily or permanently interrupting the injection cycle in progress.

With dB-Consolidation it is possible to carry out soil consolidation interventions under foundations or under slabs.
The flexibility of the site operations allows to minimize the impacts on the building as well as on the normal activities in several contexts of intervention :
The stability of the soil supporting foundations and pavements is a key condition for guaranteeing the stability and functionality of any civil engineering structure.
Natural and anthropogenic causes can modify the characteristics of the foundation soils by altering their mechanical resistance parameters. Under the weight of the overlying structure, soil foundation can undergo displacements which could generate deformations and cracks on the structure.
They are part of the anthropogenic causes the leaching of the soil attached to the water pipes losses, excavations and vibrations close to the soil foundation.
Among most common natural alterations are frequent those related to variations in the water content of the soil often linked to variations in climatic conditions (especially if extreme – long periods of drought alternating with long rainy periods). This eventuality – especially in the case of clayey soils – causes the well-known cyclic phenomenon of soil swelling with associated volume variations and consequent stress induced to the structure: thrust in the swelling phase, relaxation in the shrinkage phase. The soil alteration induced by fluctuations in the groundwater lever or by the action of the root systems of trees are also natural.
In recent decades, the growing urbanization and the increase of human activities, together with the climatic changes in progress, have generated an increase in the damage on the existing buildings following the occurrence of settlement of soil foundation.
